Which kind of producer do you need?
- Producer: shapes the arrangement and the sound of the whole song, often starting from a demo, a voice memo or a rough loop.
- Beat maker: supplies the instrumental you write and record over. Ask whether you are buying a lease, exclusive rights or a split.
- Electronic producer or sound designer: builds synth sounds, textures and arrangements for dance, ambient and experimental music.
- Mixing or mastering engineer: polishes recordings after they are made. That is a separate job, covered on the page for finding a mixing or mastering engineer.
What to put in your request
- The genre, tempo and a reference song or two.
- A link to your demo, sketch or stems.
- Remote or local, and your deadline.
- How you will compensate: a flat fee, a split or royalty, credit, a trade, or free.
- Who will own the beat and the master, and how the producer will be credited.
Working with a producer online
Most producers on CollabWav work remotely: you trade files and messages, and they send back drafts. Agree how many rounds of changes are included, the file format you want back and who keeps the project files. Our guide to collaborating with a music producer remotely walks through a working routine from the first message to the final bounce.
Paying a producer
Every request states its compensation. Producers commonly work for a flat fee, for a share of the song, or in exchange for credit or a trade. CollabWav does not process payments or enforce agreements, so write down the amount, when it is due and who owns the result before work starts. The Artist Resources page explains split sheets and work-for-hire basics.
