Mixing and mastering are different jobs

JobWhat it doesWhat you send
MixingBalances every recorded track (vocals, drums, bass, synths), shapes their sound and blends them into one stereo song.Individual tracks, called stems, plus a rough mix and a reference song.
MasteringPolishes the finished mix so the song is consistent in tone and loudness and ready to release on streaming services. One finished stereo mix per song, without a limiter on the master bus.

Many engineers offer both, and some do mastering only. If you have not mixed yet, start with a mix. A master cannot fix a weak mix.

What to put in your request

Get the best result from your engineer

Send clean, labeled stems, all starting at the same point, and a short note about what you like and dislike in the rough mix. Ask for a short test mix on one song before you commit to a whole project. Our guide on preparing stems and demos for a mixing engineer covers file formats, levels and naming step by step.
